Disaster God: Roman god, Vulcan

Vulcan: Roman god of volcanoes or conflagrations.

Story of Vulcan:

Vulcan was born to the king and queen of gods, Jupiter and Juno, who had been thrown off Mount Olympus because he wasn’t born as a handsome baby. When he had fallen into the  sea and broken his leg, he was found by Thetis, a water nymph. She took him to her underwater home and raised him as her son.

When he was reaching adulthood, he had found burning coals on the shore, being interested, he took them home and made a fire with them. He spent hours with the fire and the hotter he made the fire, he realised there were stones that sweated with gold, silver and iron.

He beat the stones to different shapes and made accessories, swords and shields. He made many gifts for his foster mother, who had worn them while visiting Mount Olympus.

Juno, Vulcan's birth mother, had learned of his abilities and demanded that Vulcan return back to her. Vulcan refused to leave his underwater home. He built a beautiful chair made of gold and silver with inlays of mother-of-pearl and sent it to Juno. The Queen of the Gods was very happy with the gift. When Juno sat in the chair, her weight engaged hidden springs and metal bands. They sprung from the chair and held Juno. The more she yelled and struggled, the more the chair held her. Vulcan had sent Juno a chair that was designed to be a trap.

After being trapped there for days, her husband contacted Vulcan and said if he released Juno, he’d give Vulcan a wife. She would be the Goddess of love and beauty known as Venus. Vulcan agreed. He built a workshop in Sicily under Mount Etna. According to legend, should Venus be unfaithful, Vulcan would become angry and beat metal that is red-hot with extreme force.

Explanation: Vulcan was responsible for volcanoes because he became angry with his wife and beat metal with brute force, causing volcanoes to form and lava to erupt.

Relation to science: Volcanoes are caused by the tectonic plates colliding and the more dense plate moving beneath the thicker plate. Vulcan’s story speaks of him beating metal which builds up and erupts.

BET: Steps of Budgeting

For the past week, we have been learning about Budgeting in Business Studies. We learnt about financial Values, goals and how to budget. Budgeting is a plan which enables people to overview their spendings and expenses, it is balancing your expenses with your income. Budgeting is a plan for often a year and it includes planned sales volumes and revenues, resource quantities, costs and expenses, assets, liabilities and cash flows.

Today we were to either make a flowchart or prezi. I decided to make a flowchart explaining the different steps of budgeting.

Reflection:

This task was fairly easy to complete, the easiest part of it was finding the information. A simple google search helped with finding a step by step of budgeting. The hardest was learning how to use the the site, Visme, since I've never used it before. It was a bit nerve recking to use the format I chose, so if I were to do this task again, I would use a different templet.

Thank you reading my blog post.

The negatives of Impulse Buying

For the past week in Business Studies, we have been learning about Impulse Buying and the negatives of it. Impulse buying is the buying of goods without planning to do so in advance, as a result of sudden impulse or whim.

Today we had to create a brochure on impulse buying, why its bad and the possible outcomes of it.

This is the brochure I created:

IMPULSE BUYING

IMPULSE BUYING

IMPULSE BUYING

Impulse buying is when people buy products, foods, etc without planning to buy it beforehand.

In short, Impulse buying is purchasing unnecessary products.

The cause for this is promotions, sales, advertisements, and the placement of products in a store.

Negatives

Negatives

-Wasting money on useless things.

-Not having enough money to pay for rent/ mortgage.

-Saving goals being effected.

-obsessive behaviour and mental health issues after impulse buying.

Impulse buying will NOT allow you to save money, have money to spend on necessities and can also affect your mental health.

IMPULSE BUYING

IMPULSE BUYING

IMPULSE BUYING

The placement of products in grocery stores have an impact on impulse buying as the popular and important products are placed at the back. While the unnecessary products are placed at the front.

The little bars and gums are placed in the front because people would normally buy them on their way out.

This task wasn't hard to complete since we already looked at the information beforehand and had were able to use it. The hardest part of the task was to decide how to present the information. The easiest was finding the information.

Thank you for reading my blog post.

Opening a new bank account

For the past week, in business studies, we have been learning about the different types of bank accounts, the terms and conditions of these bank accounts and how they work in general. Today we were given an option to either make a crosswords puzzle for the key words given or create a FAQ's page for someone who might be wanting to open a new bank account.

I had decided on option two and created a FAQ's page for someone new wanting to open a bank account. This is the following information I found and displayed:

Opening a new bank account.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account?

To open a new bank account, you would need to book an appointment with your nearest bank and bring along the following things as proof of your identity:

  • Proof of address (Any document that has your address and has been sent to you would do).

  • Proof of identification (drivers licence, passport etc)

  • IRD number

  • Copy of Visa/ residency/ citizenship.

What are the different types of bank accounts?

There are four different accounts that we provide.

Everyday accounts, just like it’s name, are suitable for everyday use with flexible options for personal banking. There is a monthly account fee of $5 and no annual fee on the Visa Debit card. Everyday accounts also do not have any credit interest.

Savings accounts are accounts on which you can earn interest on, if you leave the money in the bank for a selected time. There are two forms of interest you can earn, simple or compound.

The different accounts we provide are:

Serious Saver

0.05% interest and premium interest of 0.40%, a total of 0.45% interest p.a.

Automated and annual fee: $5 per month.

Rapid Save:

0.10% base interest and 0.30% bonus, a total of 0.40% credit interest p.a.

$3 withdrawal fee and no annual fee.

School/tertiary accounts are suitable for students moving into university and or tertiary studies. The account we provide for this have no annual fee, interest free overdraft and no transaction fees.

Term deposit accounts are accounts which are basically used to invest money by keeping the money in the bank account for a certain amount of days or years.

The rates we provide are:

0.60% p.a

120 days

1.00% p.a

180 days

1.00% p.a

240 days

1.00% p.a

1 year

What happens if I break the term deposit early?

If you unexpectedly need your money after investing in a term deposit, you can request an early withdrawal. You'll need to let us know if you're suffering from financial hardship or give us 31 days' notice of the withdrawal. If we agree to let you make an early withdrawal, we’ll reduce your rate by 3% per annum on the amount you withdraw (your return will not go below 0%).

What's the difference between EFTPOS, Debit and Credit cards?

EFTPOS stands for Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Service, it is very similar to a debit card as both are the basic equivalent of cash, without having to carry the paper money. The money comes from a current bank account, such as a freedom account.

A credit card offers credit that can be used to make purchases, balance transfers, internet banking and cash advances that one would have to pay back the loan amount in the future.

How much is the maximum overdraft limit?

There is no maximum limit and you can borrow up to your agreed overdraft limit whenever you need it, and repay some or all of it at any time. The overdraft is linked to your everyday account, so you can access it easily.

This task was not very hard finish, thought it did take time to type up the information. The hardest part of this was finding the right words to use for different audience to be able to understand and rely on the information. The easiest part of the whole process was finding the information as many different Banks, such as ANZ, have their own website which have information for the different accounts and rates.

A question for the audience:

Was the information straight forward and understandable?

Source of information: ANZ Website

Windracers Experiment

 Monday 14 September 2020

This week in Science, Kyra-Lee, Lily-Ray and I are Researching and designing a windracer. A windracer is a small, free-flying staysail for super light air. It's tall and thin. It's freestanding, so it's not attached to the headstay. The tack attaches to a deck pad-eye. Use your spinnakers' halyard to raise it and tension the luff.

After researching different types of Sails, we decided to make the 'Storm Jib' sail. The Storm Jib sail is good for strong weather and we will need something like this for the harsh wind provided from the wind blower.

On the second day, we built the first model of our windracers using newspaper, string and tape. We tried to make a replica of the plan.

On the third day, we will be testings our windracers to see if we need any changes. We then painted our sail with red, white and black stripes.

On the forth day, we tested our windracers against the rest of the class. The results helped us get an idea of the changes we would need to make to have our windracer move the furthest. The changes we are making is adding extra support to the sail, so that it could catch more air and not have the windracer toppling over.

On the fifth day we made the changes to our windracers. We added more newspaper and stabilised the sail.

On the sixth day we had the final race against the rest of the class. Our windracer was in 4th place.

The changes that we made didn't help us as much as we expected, but it did add stability.

The best thing about this project is the we came 4th and we had so much fun.

Performance Evaluation

  1. What did you perform?

I sang the song ‘Une femme avec une femme’ along with a youtube track playing.

  1. How did the performance go?

The performance was easy going and smooth but the only problem was that the track was too loud and people couldn’t hear me.

  1. What was challenging about this task?

The most difficult part was learning the song and getting the pronunciation right because the song was in french.

  1. What did you enjoy about the task?

Having a choice with which song to perform and how to perform it.

Technology And Change Essay

For the past couple of weeks, we've been learning and researching technologies made in different time era. My group and I researched the technology made in Ancient Egypt and presented the research to our class.

Link to Presentation

Then we worked individually and wrote an essay for the end of term assessment.

Technology has been around for centuries, under different time periods which gave a head start to some of mankind's greatest inventions now. The Ancient Egypt time period had amazing inventions, many of which - such as calendars, paper, clocks, tooth brushes, toothpaste - have undergone amazing advancements and are still being used till date.

One of the many things that the Egyptians invented was Papyrus or as we know it today - paper. The creation of paper has done wonders for us, from providing the Egyptians something to write their knowledge and history on, to now being turned into books - to write on or to read - paper to print on and used for many other activities. In 3000 BC, the Egyptians made the first ever form of paper using the papyrus plant which grew in the Nile region of Egypt. Papyrus was very thick with a tan colour and streaks of colour from the plant, modern day paper is found in many colours and has a range of different thickness and textures. Paper has been very important to the history of Egypt and after many advancements, it’s still being used today all over the world.

Another great invention of Ancient Egypt are scissors. Scissors were used by the Egyptians to cut hair and were fashionably made, we still use scissors now for many different reasons, cutting hair, cutting fabric, etc. In 1500 BC, the Egyptians created a scissor-like metal device which was then adapted by different time periods and in 1761, the first ever modern scissors were made. The scissors invented by the Egyptians were made of two large metal blades, forged together and engraved with pictures to make them look fashionable, the modern scissors are made with hinges, metal or plastic handles for a much easier use. Many modern scissors are also personalised for different uses such as metal scissors used by hairstylists and scissors with patterned ends to create more fun patterns. The importance of scissors are still shown today as they are being manufactured and are in great demand.

The Egyptians also invented the first ever calendar and clock. These are both very important inventions as they help us know the day, time, month and year. In 2510 BC, the first civil calendar was established which has since then gone through great advancements, being adapted by different groups of people and later being made into what it is today. The civil calendar used to be printed/carved on to stone by the Egyptians and after many advancements, the modern calendars are found printed onto paper and also digitally. Around 1500 BCE, the Egyptians invented a device which divided the sunlight into 10 parts, plus two ‘twilight hours’, this is known to be the first ever portable timepiece. Many years later and the modern clocks came to be, made of metal, plastic, wood and etc with a ring of numbers starting from 1 to 12 with hands traveling around the ring and showing different times. This invention is specifically very important because without it, we wouldn’t be able to tell the time or know what day it is.

The inventions of Ancient Egypt are beyond amazing as Egypt gave a start to many of the important devices that are being used today. They had invented paper, which is a very useful product, scissors, which are now being used in everyday life for many reasons and the first calendar and clock, which is most probably the most important invention so far. They had done this during an era which we think of as old but their minds and craftsmanship has provided us with many great devices.

Forces and Motion

For the past few weeks, in science, we have been learning about forces and motions. The main topic we looked into yesterday was how to calculate the speed of a moving car on Carmen Rd.

How to find the speed of a moving object: to find the speed, we need to find the distance of which the car traveled and the time taken for the car to travel the certain distance. The formula we use to calculate speed is: Distance/Time.

During period one on Tuesday, we worked in groups to calculate the speed of the cars traveling through Carmen Rd. First we measured between two lamp posts, which gave us the distance of 50m. Then we waited for vehicle to pass through one lamp post to start the timer and stop it when the vehicle passed through the second lamp post. We did so for 10 cars and started to find the speed.

This is where we used the formula for speed, which is distance/time and calculated the speed to get a conclusion as an end result.

An example of the calculations we did: 50m/4.35s = 11.5m s-1 (m s-1 is the unit used for speed), we then converted the speed in to km hr-1 (km per hour) by multiplying the answer - 11.5m s-1 - by 3.6. The answer in km hr-1 was 41.4km hr-1 - which is below the speed limit as the speed limit for  Carmen Rd is 50km.

Results: As part of the experiment, we had to write a conclusion to describe the results. The question, which assumed that the cars are traveling too fast, was proven wrong as none of the cars were over speeding. The average speed of 10 cars traveling through Carmen Rd was 42.84km hr-1, which is below the speed limit.

But we can't say that our method of measuring the speed was the best. We could've improved the results by having people standing beside both of the lamp posts and indicate when a vehicle has passed through one. This would help us get a more accurate time to work with.

The other reason why the vehicles weren't moving fast was because of the traffic lights, which were right beside the 50m we chose to measure.

Starting Up A Business

Today in business we analysed the data we received from the survey to get the students opinions on different aspects (prices, flavour/colour). This is for market day and is there to help us with the product we will be selling. Our product is Candy Floss and Fizzy drinks. Our brand is called Candy Floss Confetti

We are selling candy floss because it's not something people eat everyday and is like a treat. We are also selling fizzy drinks along with different choices of colour for the candy floss.

Do you like candy floss?

If the answer would be yes, we would carry on with our plan but if the answer would be no, then we’d have to change our plan and find another product to provide for the day.

How much are you willing to pay for candy floss?

It doesn't affect us as much with how much people are willing to pay as we have different options to choose for what you want and it's very cheap for us to get and create our product.

Does the colour of the candy floss matter?

This question was asked to determine whether or not people had a preference for a certain colour or if there was a more ‘popular’ colour. This wouldn’t affect us at all as it gives us more options to choose from for colours.

If yes what colours?

People will give their opinions and we can get the 2 most popular colours and make that colour candy floss.

How much would you be willing to pay for fizzy?  $2

This question wouldn’t affect us much because this is there to give us options on how much a person is willing to pay.

Music and the Civil Rights

1. How did music affect the Civil Rights movement?

During the Civil Rights Movement, people used music as a way to spread their word and how they felt being discarded from places and by people.

2. Why was music such a powerful force?

Music has an effect on people not much different from words. Many people are able to sing their minds and aren't able to talk about it to another. Music is a way of expressing one's self.

3. Find some examples (youtube) of music from the 60's...
